My Thoughts On The ‘Batman vs. Superman’ Castings So Far (UPDATED)

Warner Bros. is cooking up something big with their grand sequel to last summer’s Man of Steel. I have touched on the subject quite a bit on our YouTube Channel, and now I am compelled to sum up my thoughts on the news we’ve gotten so far.

Batman- It was last year when we first heard that Batman would be joining the mega-sequel to Man of Steel. Then some time after that we heard that Ben Affleck would be the next Caped Crusader taking the mantle from Christian Bale. At first, I had my doubts about Affleck because naturally you would think about Daredevil and how disappointing that film is. I then took a look at his more recent work such as Argo, The Town, and Hollywoodland, which were all great. We know he can act, but there is also another thing about Ben Affleck that makes him a huge advantage to the DC Cinematic Universe. He is a great director; he’s actually won an Academy Award for Best Picture while he was the director, which leads me to believe he will helm The Justice League or some of the future solo Batman films. He has actually been approached by Warner Bros. to direct their now defunct Justice League movie back in 2006. Overall, Ben Affleck seems like one of the more inspired casting choices for this movie.

Wonder Woman- Soon after Warner Bros. revealed that Ben Affleck would be playing Batman in Batman vs. Superman, they revealed that Wonder Woman would not only be in the movie, she would be played by the beautiful Gal Gadot. While she may not be the best actress, but she does have a history of working with ensemble casts, as seen in Fast and Furious 4, 5, & 6. She is a bit thin to play a woman who comes from an island of huge, warrior women. Gal Gadot has already confirmed that she is working out with Mark Twight aka the guy who trained Henry Cavill for Man of Steel.  In an interview with Good Evening with Gai Pines she said, “It’s the physical preparations that I’m starting now. A very serious training regime – Kung Fu, kickboxing, swords, jujutsu, Brazilian…1,000 and 1 things…I’ll gain body mass.” With that being said we can rest assured she will be the definitive Wonder Woman on screen in 2016.

Lex Luthor and Alfred– Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor is either one of two things, awesome because of the new direction they’re taking, or terrible because they chose him to play the most commonly represented version of Lex, the narcissistic megalomaniacal Superman hater. People have speculated that this could be the Lex from Smallville or Superman: Birthright who Jesse happens to fit the look and feel of both versions. As for Jeremy Irons as Alfred, I think they will use the Earth One version that isn’t just a butler; he has a past without the Wayne family where he learned to fight and a past with the Wayne Family where he is trusted. Both of these casting choices seem extremely inspired, and Jesse Eisenberg is a gamble for sure but they wouldn’t risk a billion dollar franchise if they didn’t have ‘S’ of steel.

Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter, and Tao Okamoto- Warner Bros. just announced that Oscar-winning actress Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey of 300: Rise of an Empire, and Tao Okamoto of The Wolverine have joined the cast of Zack Snyder’s untitled Man of Steel sequel. The three actors will all be playing “characters newly created for the film” but may I remind you that the same thing was said about Marion Cotillard’s Talia Al Ghul. We also can’t forget that Zack Snyder denied that General Zod was the villain for Man of Steel so do not be so quick to believe these new additions will not be playing familiar characters. I do not know much about Holly Hunter but Zack Snyder was certainly ecstatic to work with her because he made sure there was a part for her in the film. We first saw Tao Okamoto in James Mangold’s The Wolverine where she played Mariko Yashida. I very much like this casting and the fact that it adds some needed diversity into these films. A lot of people have been speculating that she could be playing Lady Shiva or Kitana but I think she might be playing something as simple as a S.T.A.R. Labs employee who has an extended role similar to Agent Coulson. Finally, I will get to the casting that I personally have recommended to be in this movie, Callan Mulvey. When we first heard the rumors of Metallo being in the film my mind immediately shot to Callan Mulvey as he looks menacing and sometimes insane. My last prediction is that he might be playing Steve Trevor, which would work very well as we see they are casting military-esque people and the military played a large role in Man of Steel. These castings seem to be a bit random since we have almost no details on who they are playing but I’m sure they’ll be great additions to this highly anticipated sequel.

I am without a doubt stoked for this movie, with all of the inspired castings it seems as though we will see all of these characters taken in new and exciting directions. I will continue to update this post as new things are announced so make sure to come back after the next casting. As always make sure to tell me your thoughts on the castings of Batman vs. Superman down in the comment section, and make sure to stay Film Smart!
