Today the news came out that the two- time Oscar winner Michael Douglas would join the cast of Marvel’s Ant- Man which is set to hit theaters July of 2015. This news comes as a surprise to many who thought that Paul Rudd was going to play Hank Pym. Those of you who are at least somewhat familiar with the Comics, which you have to be to know Ant- Man, know that there are several Ant- Men. One of the most famous aside from Hank Pym is Scott Lang who Paul Rudd is said to play. All of this comes from Variety. They also stated that Douglas would be the Villain but have since taken that information off their website. Some people have speculated whether the villain rumor wasn’t true or that Variety may have released more info than Marvel wanted them too.
What this news means is that Marvel is willing to not only introduce characters the average person has never heard of, but to add different people who have been those characters in the comic book. They also are adding icons like Douglas and Robert Redford to play these characters. Michael Douglas who has won two oscars and is fresh off his Golden Globe win for his portrayal of Liberace in Behind The Candelabra has managed to stay in the headlines. Headlines are what Marvel needs. Their last few haven’t excited movie lovers, comic book readers or average movie goers. People can now gain interest in a movie about a character they have never even heard of which is remarkable. Marvel is in need of some big headlines which this could bring. Marvel has been lagging behind DC’s Man of Steel sequel, but then again DC is playing catch up to Marvel which means that Marvel could just sit back and reap the benefits of The Avengers, Iron Man 3 and Thor the Dark World. However Marvel chooses not sit back on they’re billions and decide to keep moving forward.
What this means for Marvel now is that they yet again have added even more validity and a level of sophistication to their movies. They have always had good actors like oscar nominees Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson and the upcoming Djimon Hounsou. They also have the legends like Anthony Hopkins and the upcoming Robert Redford, Glenn Close and now Michael Douglas. This shows Marvels devotion to getting the best character for the part which we as fans should and I think do appreciate. It is also worth mentioning that though the casting of James Spader as Ultron didn’t exactly have people jumping up with anticipation he is in one of the most popular new tv shows ( The Blacklist) in which he received a Golden Globe nomination which could bring in another audience or demographic to the Avengers sequel. With this casting choice of Michael Douglas Marvel is only doing themselves favors.
